Summary

‘First we eat, then we do everything else.’ - M.F.K. Fisher THE LITTLE BIG BOOK OF COMFORT FOOD is packed with more than 200 family recipes - simple, direct, tried and true, everyday marvelous cozy food. The best meatloaf, the best roasted chicken, the best apple cranberry crisp, and the best chicken soup. Comfort food is what you want when you come in from the cold, when you’ve got a cold, when you want to have an intimate conversation, when you want to get your kids settled down, your husband comforted, or your mom welcomed. It is the coziest macaroni & cheese, the crispiest chocolate chip cookie, the perfect pot roast, and that lemon meringue pie you have never dared to make. Collecting these basic, foolproof recipes from real kitchens and from real people was Welcome’s objective when publisher Lena Tabori and her daughters, senior editor Katrina Fried and managing editor Natasha Tabori Fried, set out to make this book. With the belief that comfort food is, by its very nature, food that has been passed down through generations, it seemed appropriate to reach out to friends and family across the country. There is really no occasion for which there isn’t great comfort food. And, this fat, gorgeous little book has it all: French toast for breakfast, grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch, New England clam chowder for that late afternoon snack, scones when you settle down for tea, mama bread” for toast or for that turkey sandwich the day after,” strawberry shortcake for dessert, and chocolate malt for anytime, night or day. Some of these recipes can be found in one of the twenty-six Little Big Books already published, but most are entirely original to this book. Illustrated with heart-warming vintage art, this delightful gift book includes: * Breakfast: From buttermilk pancakes and banana nut waffles to hearty corned beef hash, classic quiche, and fluffy omelets. * Lunch and Snacks: From cozy potato leek soup and silky corn chowder to the best egg salad sandwich and cheeseburger with homemade fries. * Cookies, Sweets, and Teatime: From the perfect chocolate fudge and sugar cookies to irresistible pumpkin bars and Nana’s buttery scones. * Dinner: From the best southern fried chicken and chili with cornbread to beef stew, Swedish meatballs, and Mom’s no-fail lasagna. * Sides: From crispy garlic bread and homey creamed spinach to moist bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, and perfect roasted vegetables. * Desserts: From heavenly lemon squares and warm berry cobbler to carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, apple crisp, creamy rice pudding, chocolate layer cake, and chocolate pudding. * Beverages: From fireside favorites like hot chocolate with fresh whipped cream, Swedish glögg, and mulled apple cider to chilly black-and-white milkshakes, root beer floats, and refreshing lemonade. * Holiday Meals: From a foolproof Thanksgiving turkey to the best holiday honey-baked ham and mashed sweet potatoes.
