Summary

English summary: Better than their reputation: The civilisation of the Vandals. Their name has been used to describe destruction and devastation. In their heyday, though, these people lived in a well-organised state and followed Roman lifestyles. In the 5th century AD, when the Great Migration unsettled the Late Roman Empire, the Vandals moved through Europe to North Africa, conquering Roman lands and erecting a mighty kingdom. The Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe presents a completely different image of the Vandals- from their origins in Central Europe to their downfall. About 300 objects of a very high calibre, among these precious jewellery and unique mosaics from international museums such as the Musee National du Bardo at Tunis, illustrate civilisation and history of North Africa at the time of the Vandals. German text.
