Summary

In the fourth presidential election the Republican candidates -- Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr -- defeated their opponents, the incumbent president John Adams and fellow Federalist Charles Pinckney. However, because Jefferson and Burr had each received 73 electoral votes, it was left to the House of Representatives to select the president. After a week of voting in Congress, Jefferson was finally awarded the presidency on the thirty-sixth ballot. In The Election of 1800 and the Administration of Thomas Jefferson, historian Noble E. Cunningham describes the most spirited campaign to that point in American political history. Book jacket.
