Author Biography

 Javad Parvizi, MD completed his medical training in the United Kingdom, graduating from University of Sheffield in 1991. He then completed his surgical training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where he also attained a master’s degree from the Mayo Foundation in Molecular Biology involving evaluating bone healing and cartilage repair, which sparked his interest in both basic science and clinical research in the field of orthopedics. His fellowship training was completed under the direction of Professor Reinhold Ganz at Inselspital, Bern, Switzerland. Dr. Parvizi is currently a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Rothman Institute and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He also is the director of clinical research and a member of the education committee. His dedication to education encompasses a number of activities including publication of numerous books and book chapters, and over 240 peer-reviewed publications.  Dr. Parvizi’s desire to provide succinct, accurate, and relevant information was the impetus behind this book.

Brian A. Klatt, MD
 graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1997. After completing his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh, he served 4 years on active duty with the United States Air Force. The final 2 years in the military were spent working with the residency program at Wilford Hall Medical Center, and it was there that his commitment to education was solidified. After an honorable discharge from the military, Dr. Klatt completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the Rothman Institute, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. His decision to attend a fellowship at the Rothman Institute was a direct result of meeting Dr. Rothman at a lecture in San Antonio. Dr. Klatt has been lucky to be mentored by many of the great names in orthopedic surgery today. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Klatt returned to the University of Pittsburgh, where he continues to dedicate himself to the education of medical students and residents. His research interests are varied and encompass both clinical and basic science topics. He was honored to work with Dr. Parvizi in producing this text. Dr. Klatt hopes that this book will provide a quick and easy source for residents who seek to understand the essential information required to master total knee arthroplasty.
