Summary

Founded in Turin in 1963, the Sperone Gallery has dedicated itself to exhibiting radical and innovative art forms: Pop Art, Arte Povera, Neo-Dada, Minimalism, Conceptual Art and the 'Transavantgarde' have all found their place at this site of engagement between the Italian art scene and the rest of the world. Consisting of two volumes, La Galleria Spelonedocuments the Sperone Gallery's history with images from more than 150 artists hosted in Turin, Rome, and New York. The first volume centers around the Gallery in Turin from 1963 to 1972; the second volume picks up with the opening of gallery spaces in Rome and New York, and extends from 1972 to the present day, ending with a chronological and geographical listing of all the exhibitions and artists. Serving as both a critical and historical document of the Sperone Gallery's history, La Galleria Speloneacts as a history of the past four decades of avant-garde art as well.
