Summary

In 1966, college basketball was almost completely segregated. But out at little-known Texas Western College, the only race coach Don Haskins cared about was the race to the national championship. In the now-legendary NCAA championship game that year, the Texas Western Miners took the country by storm with a surprising victory against the all-white University of Kentucky and clinched the 1966 NCAA tournament title. The Miners had captivated spectators everywhere, and for reasons other than their unpredicted win. The game was broadcast on national television, and viewers watched in amazement as Haskins started five black players, openly defied the existing rules of race and sports, and set in motion the desegregation of all college teams in the South.
