Summary

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Organized crime transformed the country, and the country transformed organized crime.

The war against drug trafficking, the rotation of new governments in Mexico and the United States, the capture and extradition of drug lords, cartels’ breakups and divisions, the emergence of new leaders, fluctuations in the national and international markets, and the evolution of drug trafficking and consumption have created a new Mexico, which is currently going through the greatest violence crisis in 80 years.

And government strategies often make things worse: “hugs instead of gunshots” makes no sense when there are criminal groups that rule entire areas of the country. In fact, gangs that had been practically disbanded have already reappeared, entire states are once again being controlled by narcos, and several cartels have received accolades and messages of support that have empowered them.

This new work by Jorge Fernández Menéndez shows which strategies have not worked, what results they have had, and how they should be changed ... at the risk of a bloodier and ungovernable future.

“This is the story we will tell in this book: that of the passage into a new era of violence, insecurity, and drug trafficking; a time in which the old has not died, and the new has not yet been born. The path from El Chapo to fentanyl.” -Text from the introduction
