Author Biography

Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923) was born in Pennsylvania and at the age of seventeen moved to California, where she began her lifelong devotion to the welfare of children. In 1878, she started the first free kindergarten in California. Over her lifetime, Ms. Wiggin authored a number of children's books, but none brought her the acclaim of her overnight best-seller, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Its sequel, The New Chronicles of Rebecca, was published in 1907.
