Author Biography

David Goodhart is one of the most distinctive voices in British political comment and analysis. He is the liberal who warned the left about the backlash against large-scale immigration and who showed how multiculturalism could undermine the welfare state. His book The British Dream: Successes and Failures of Post-War Immigration (Atlantic, 2013) was one of the most talked about books of the year and was praised across the political spectrum. It was runner up for the Orwell Prize in 2014 and was a finalist for 'Political Book of the Year' in the Paddy Power Political Book Awards. Goodhart has also written and broadcast on social mobility, the modern labor market, the European Union, Germany, Islam in Britain and the Blue Labour movement. Goodhart worked for the Financial Times for 12 years (including a stint in Germany covering unification) before leaving to establish Prospect magazine in 1995. After 15 years as founder-editor he passed the editor's chair to Bronwen Maddox in 2010 but remains editor at large and a regular contributor to the magazine. He has subsequently been director of the centre-left think tank Demos where he created the Integration Hub website (a central focus for the national debate on ethnic minority integration and segregation). He now heads the Demography, Immigration and Integration Unit for the Policy Exchange think tank . He is a regular contributor to the broadsheet press and frequent broadcaster on radio and TV, including the presenter of several BBC Radio programs.
