Summary

Rommel's Panzers is a detailed examination of why Rommel and his panzers were so successful. It includes an analysis of the composition, tactics, doctrine, personnel, and handware of the panzer divisions, and why they were so effective in the hands of excellent tacticians such as Rommel. The book also analyzes why the armored formations of Germany's adversaries, which were often more numerous and powerful, were at a disadvantage in comparison. As Rommel's Panzers makes clear, the deciding factor was how units were used on the battlefield to maximize their attributes in an all-arms engagement, rather than a question of overall technological or numerical superiority. Rommel's Panzers contains black and white photographs throughout and full-color maps that help the reader to understand the sequence of events during particular engagements and panzer attacks. In particular, the book foctises on the many successes Rommel and his tanks enjoyed in North African in 1911-1912, particularly during the Battle of Gazala in May 1912. These victories are all the more remarkable when one considers that they were won when Rommel was often outnumbered and at the end of his supply lines. Rommel's Panzers is an intriguing insight into the leadership style of a master of armored warfare. Book jacket.
