Summary

This book is a major (indeed the only) anthology of 19th century poetry about Ancient Egypt, edited by Egyptologist Professor Donald P. Ryan. It brings together, in a series of themed sections, verses by well-known poets - such as Shelley, Keats, Byron and Longfellow - with those by less-famous but no less fascinating writers. The editor provides a series of commentaries that set the poems in their archaeological and historical context and gives short biographical descriptions of the poets featured here. The book is illustrated with 19th century line drawings that complement the poems.
