Summary

Covering four hundred years of Shakespeare scholarship, S. Schoenbaum's William Shakespeare: A Documentary Life was greeted as "a master-piece" by The New York Review of Books and called "our best life of Shakespeare" by the Guardian (Manchester). This compact edition makes the resources of the world's greatest Shakespeare collections accessible to all readers who have been unable to consult the magnificent original volume. The new book contains the full text, refined and amplified, of the parent volume, and fifty of the documents reproduced in smaller format. Schoenbaum has incorporated new material into his narrative, including an eyewitness account, in harrowing detail, of a murder that may have occurred in New Place, the great house Shakespeare was to buy in Stratford in 1597. Book jacket.
