Summary

Soldier, statesman, reformer, writer, painter, journalist, politician, pilot, wit, bon vivant, builder ... Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) packed a dozen vocations and avocations into his 90 years -- a life so full of astonishing experiences and amazing accomplishments that it seems to belong more to the realm of fiction than fact. And yet all Churchill's other achievements pale in comparison with his performance as Prime Minister of a beleaguered Britain from 1940 to 1945 -- five years in which he, perhaps more than any other individual, saved Western Civilization from destruction. In Winston Churchill, James Humes -- who knew Churchill personally -- brilliantly captures the extraordinary life of this complex and often troubled leader. Book jacket.
